Too Busy to Eat? Three Tips To Jump Start Your Healthful Eating

For many busy professionals, finding time to eat a healthy meal can be difficult. Darting from one task to the next and working long after the day is over, doesn’t leave you a lot of free time. To feel better and improve your energy, make healthy eating a part of your daily routine. Keep these three simple tips in mind as you jump start your healthy eating habits.

Tip #1: Plan Your Meals in Advance

You make a lot of decisions throughout the day. Once it’s time to decide on a meal, you don’t have the mental energy to make another decision. You’re tired. You choose the most convenient meal option, but not the most beneficial to you — takeout, junk food, or no food at all.

Plan: Assess your schedule at the beginning of each day or week.  Identify where you’ll create time to eat and add this appointment to your schedule.  Find simple recipes, one-pot dishes, or slow cooker recipes that you can prepare once and eat from throughout the week.

Tip #2: Prep Ahead

Prepare ingredients for your recipes ahead of time to make cooking easier. Use a few hours of your weekends for meal prep. Cut up chicken, prep mason jar salads, divide fruit into single servings, and even prepare snacks. Good preparation makes it easier for you to grab a healthy meal when your schedule is hectic.

Plan: Review all the recipes that you’ll cook for the week and decide which ingredients each recipe shares. Dice and measure the ingredients and store them in containers until you’re ready to use them.

Tip #3: Add Healthy Snacks

Many professionals find that snacking is their biggest healthy eating downfall. Try prepping some of these key snacks so that you always have something healthy on hand.  Examples of snacks are:

  • Greek yogurt and granola
  • Banana with peanut butter
  • Apple slices with almond butter (and chocolate chips, if you want to help that sweet tooth)
  • Trail mix
  • Celery sticks or baby carrots and hummus

Plan: When you prepare the ingredients for your recipes for the week, also decide which snack foods you’ll eat. If trail mix will be your go-to snack, place the ingredients in snack bags or reusable containers.

There are plenty of healthful eating options that can keep you looking and feeling your best. Don’t let being busy prevent you from eating healthy. Instead, incorporate these three tips to make healthful eating a part of your everyday plan.
